When is the best time to go gorilla trekking?
Rwanda is one of the few countries hosting mountain Gorillas. It should be noted that Gorilla trekking is a life time event which every body should enjoy before death- Meeting Mountain Gorillas in their natural environment can’t be forgotten. Gorilla trekking is number one tourist activity in Rwanda and on top of generating foreign exchange.
When planning to visit Rwanda, gorilla tracking came first into people’ mind but keeps on asking what is the best time to visit Rwanda? The answer is, gorilla trekking is all year round activity however, the activity is more enjoyed during the short dry season from mid-December to early February or over the long dry season months of June to September. These periods offer by far the easiest hiking conditions and the lowest malaria risk. It should be noted that in dry season, Gorillas move actively in their natural habitat hence giving the most amazing view to visitors.
In dry season, trekking is more enjoyable due the fact that, visitors move through the bamboo forest with ease due low under growth and can be able to move long distances searching for Gorillas with out being afraid of rainfall.
Rwanda receives rain from late February through March, April and May and so many tourists try to avoid these months for fear of getting muddy and all wet while tracking the mountain gorillas. On the other hand, unfit or sick people can target rainy season because during this period, more fruits for gorilla yields, therefore gorillas moves down slopes to eat fruits thus found easily. During this period, visitors treks and found gorillas after few minutes walk- approximately 2-3 hours.
