Virunga and Volcanoes National parks
VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK AND VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Virunga national park is the most popular National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga National Park is a national park in the Albertine Rift Valley in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1925 and is among the first protected areas in Africa. Its famously know for hosting Gorillas and its park of the Virunga region. In Democratic Republic of Congo, Virunga National park is the most visited park because of Gorillas, mountain hiking and other tourist activities which attracts a big number of Visitors. Mountain Nyiragongo which is one of the world's active Volcanos is found in Volcanoes national Park.
On the other hand, Volcanoes National park is found in Rwanda. It receives the largest number of tourists compared to Nyungwe National Park and Akagera National Park. Even if the Gorilla permit cost US$1500, Volcanoes National Park receives at least ten visitors per day. It covers 160 km2 (62 sq mi) of rainforest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.
Both parks are situated at the slopes of Virunga mountains – in Rwanda, Gorilla treks tales place on slopes of mountain Karisoke, Mountain Karisimbi or Mountain Sabyinyo among others. In Democratic Republic of Congo, Gorilla trekking takes place on the slopes of Mountain Nyiragongo, Mountain Nyamuragira or Mountain Mikeno among others.
Virunga National park and Volcanoes National park are found in Africa. Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are both African countries and neighbors.
In both parks, Gorilla trekking is the major tourist activity. In Rwanda, the biggest percentage of visitors comes purposely to see Gorillas and the same in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Virunga National park and Volcanoes national park are both world heritage sites.
Both parks are conserved by National and International conservation agencies like European Unions, UNESCO among others.
On the other hand, Virunga national park is situated in Democratic Republic of Congo while Volcanoes National park in Rwanda.
Virunga National park is larger than Volcanoes National park in terms of land at 8,090 km2 (3,120 sq mi) and is listed in the List of World Heritage in Danger since 1994.
Virunga National park is a mix of tropical and savanna vegetation while Volcanoes National park is bamboo forest.
Volcanoes National park receives more visitors than Virunga National park. This is because Rwanda is politically stable than Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Volcanoes National park protects a larger number of mountain Gorillas than Virunga National park. The reason is related to insecurity in the virunga Park. Due to seasonal unrest in DR. Congo, some gorillas are killed which reduces the number.
